Aghios Matthaios

Aghios Matthaios is a traditional picturesque mountainous village located 22 km south west of Corfu. Its population reaches 1088 residents who most of them are mainly involved with agriculture . The village has been built on the full green slopes of Mount Gamilios surrounded by many charming stone and traditional houses. Aghios Matthaios has a lot of old monasteries and family owned churches. A road leads to the Monastery of Pantokrator at 460 attitude. The Medieval Castle of Gardiki is one of the most ancient place of the village. Of the seaside of the village is been declared as Natura 2000 area and some of the magnificent sandy bitches of the island such as Halikounas, Prasoudi, Paramoans and Saint Nicholas is just 2 to 4 klm away form   the centre of the village. On the centre, travellers can find 2 super market, tradition coffee shop and taverna with homemade local cuisine.
